La Sociedad de Economía Mixta se originó en países europeos y alcanzó un mayor auge durante la segunda guerra mundial cuando empezó a hacerse aplicación de ella, especialmente en Francia, a partir de la explotación de la energía eléctrica, la navegación fluvial y marítima, aérea y por último, el transporte ferroviario.
